Evaluations of the periodontal tissues can be accomplished with photographs taken during the first oral health appointment. In order to design a natural smile, gums should be symmetrical in the mouth. This cosmetic aspect looks at natural gum heights, specifically in the front region.
There are only two separate procedures used to level out the gums and the first involves a gum lift. This method involves the taking away periodontal tissue to make sure that both sides look even. The other treatment option is referred as a gum graft. This option tries to add tissues to an area that is lacking proper root exposure or where there is clearly a recession. This method works to cover the tooth and also making it even with adjacent teeth.
A gum specialist called a Periodontist may be required to perform the treatments depending on how extensive the work required is. Healing time tends to take about three to twelve weeks. Note - these procedures may be required prior to installation of any crowns or veneers.
